Big Lottery Fund Allots £1 Million to Carer Programs in Scotland

Securing adequate medical care when ill, and especially when elderly, is often a difficult task, but after the challenge of this necessity, many people may fall short of acquiring the emotional and social support they need to remain engaged with the community and avoid potentially harmful isolation. UK National Lottery players can feel especially positive about their ticket purchases this week with the announcement that the Big Lottery Fund will be handing out £1 million in lottery charity funds to a set of five programs throughout Scotland that help to train and provide resources for carers.

Caregivers are an often-overlooked yet essential component of health care for those who might not otherwise be able to get out on their own or participate in certain activities. Providing support and assistance to these carers can greatly aid in the quality of care that is in turn administered to the UK’s sick and elderly, resulting in happier and more prosperous lives even in the most dire of situations. The charitable giving is just one of many initiatives undertaken by the Big Lottery Fund to improve the lives of UK citizens and help meaningful projects take flight. With significant sums of money distributed throughout the year to causes in a wide variety of sectors, the UK National Lottery helps its players have great fun within a context that feels great no matter who wins the jackpot.

Scotland Slated to Receive £400 Million from the Big Lottery Fund

Administrators, social groups, and other parties of interest in Scotland may have been disappointed and angered recently by the Big Lottery Fund’s decision to divert a significant portion of allocated UK National Lottery funding from the country to the London 2012 Olympics, but an announcement today at the Fund’s first national grant holders meeting has helped to bring a bit of peace to the situation. The Fund divulged a plan to invest £400 million in Scotland over the next five years, a sum that’s considerably higher proportionally than the £190 million it has spent in the country over the past three years.

Organizers in Scotland noted that while the money has the potential to do a great deal of good for Scottish people who are suffering from poor housing and nutrition, mental and medical health needs, or difficulty in securing education, it must be managed and distributed properly in order to affect the greatest and most meaningful changes. Though the funds represent a major victory for Scotland in obtaining helpful resources, there are still concerns over the Fund’s decision to allot previously devoted monies to the Olympics, and efforts remain to re-claim these funds for the country rather than the games. Whether Scotland will succeed in obtaining even more money from the Fund remains to be seen, but there will likely be much work for organizers and state leaders to complete with the existing funds in the meantime.
